Our Tellaro Festivals and Events section describes for you the local festivities in this area of Liguria...
Golfo
dei Poeti, Panoramic view of the town
One of the most spectacular events in the village takes place on Christmas Eve when the town celebrates the birth of the Jesus. Many people from the neighbouring towns come to every year to enjoy the magical atmosphere as over 8,000 candles lead the way to the seafront lighting the whole village. Here close to midnight the statue of the Baby Jesus is emerged from the water carried by a group of divers and the birth is celebrated by fireworks over the sea.
The patron of Tellaro is Saint Giorgio and is celebrated on April 23rd.
While every year on the second Sunday in August, the village celebrates the traditional "Festival of the Octopus". The legend goes that in July 1660 Saracen pirates tried to attack the village, but something unusual happened: the guardian of the bell tower had fallen asleep while on guard but the bell started ringing just when the pirates were landing. It was believed that a giant octopus coming out of the water had sounded the bell saving Tellaro from the attack.
So during the Festival octopus is served everywhere, prepared in the two different ways:
Octopus "Tellaro-style " is boiled and then chopped up into pieces and mixed with cooked potatoes, olives, tomatoes, onions, parsley and oil. Or
Octopus "Inferno-style " stewed in a pan with bay leaves, marjoram, chillies, tomatoes and some white wine.
