On the western side of the bay of San Terenzo , you cannot fail to notice the medieval San Terenzo Castle. It sits on top of a rocky spur known as La Bastia some fifteen meters from the sea level, overlooking the town.

The castle was initially built as a single ten-meter tall square watchtower on a pentagonal base with three circular towers at the corners. During the centuries, it has undergone several modifications whereby a second interior defensive wall was added, with an irregular pentagonal shape, equipped with circular lookout points on three corners.

During the ages, the San Terenzo Castle has acted as a defence fortress keeping the town away from attacks coming from the sea. One of the first keepers of the Castle was Giovanni of Mongiardino, already keeper of the Lerici Castle in 1401. Giacomo Rossi took over the role of castle keeper next, and fought against the Pisani, obtaining great praise from Simon Boccanegra during the period in which the castle belonged to the Republic of Genova in the Gulf of La Spezia .
Nowadays the Castle hosts numerous art exhibits and various other cultural events, which certainly liven up the San Terenzo summers. It also affords great panoramic views over the town and the bay.

You can get to the castle from the bottom of Piazza Brusacà, where there is sign for the stairs up the small hill which leads to the entrance of the fortress.

Beneath the walls of the castle and towards the west, there lies a very evocative promenade, which also supports the fortress and ends in a little beach with crystal clear water. This promenade also represents the actual "from castle to castle walk" which will lead you from San Terenzo all the way to Lerici Castle at the other end of this wide bay.
