Through the centuries, many famous poets, writers and artists have been drawn to the area and once touched by its irresistible beauty and charm have spent part of their lives in the villages and small towns of the gulf.
Percy Bysshe Shelley lived in the village of San Terenzo, and died when his boat was hit by a storm on his way home from Livorno. There is a grotto dedicated to Lord Byron at Portovenere from which Byron famously swam to visit his friends the Shelleys in Lerici on the other side of the gulf. David Herbert Lawrence, Virginia Wolf, the writer and painter George Sand, and the Italian writers Petrarca, Montale, Gabriele D’Annunzio and Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, were all big admirers of the area and often spoke of the charm and natural beauty of the gulf.
It was in 1919 that the dramatist Sem Benelli referred for the first time at the gulf as Gulf of Poets; while staying in San Terenzo working on his work “La cena delle beffe” and the name continues to be affectionately used to date...
