La Befana is an old woman who rides a broomstick and her arrival is loved and celebrated as much as Santa Claus' in Italy. She delivers sweets and presents to the kids on the eve of Epiphany in January.
To mark her arrival there are celebrations in almost every town. Here are a few highlights :
Deiva Marina - Sunday, Jan 6th 2013 at 3pm - Live Nativity Scene with procession of shepherds, angels and Magi, lambs and more...
Portovenere - Sunday, Jan 6th 2013 at 3pm - Enjoy the 'Flying Befana' who will fly down from the Tower to Piazza Bastreri to give sweets and candies to the children...
Lerici - Saturday, Jan 5th 2013 at 5:30pm - La Befana will descent from the Bell Tower in Piazza Garibaldi with her bag full of sweets and coal...
Every Saturday between the period of Jan 5 and Jan 26, 2013 , the Museum of Oriental Art 'Chiossone' in Genoa is organising a guided tour of its collections.

This year the Luna Park in Genoa continues to be a great event that attracts visitors from all over Liguria and the neighboring region. It is set up in Piazzale Kennedy and guarantees moments of absolute fun. Make sure you try two excellent rides ( but only if you have a strong stomach) - the Rocket and the X-Zone.

The Carnevale di Venezia is an event not to be missed. This year it is moved slightly forward and will begin on Jan 26th . In fact, traditionally the carnival was held just after Christmas on Boxing day. Its aim this year is to celebrate the festivities around New Year's and Epiphany and is themed 'Capodanno in Maschera' ( or 'New Year's in Masks')
In addition, there are tons of cultural events to enjoy during the Carnival as well. Do not miss the walking theatre show 'Secrets in Venice' where you will be taken back to the life of the Serenissima and its Carnival while guided through the maze of mystery that surround the lagoon at the time...
