Celebrities and famous people are drawn to the beauty and charm of the Liguria region in Italy as much as any traveller. Its stunning seaside scenery, fine cuisine and idyllic fishing ports have ensured that this part of Italy is on every celeb holiday wishlist.
The fact is that the Italian Riviera has been attracting the elite for many centuries. You can find records of noblemen commenting of its charm and exclusivity as early as the late 16th century, over 400 years ago.
Then in the 18th and 19th century, British and northern European aristocrats as well as many famous artists and poets began to visit. Some, the likes of Byron and Shelley were captivated enough by its stunning beauty that decided to settle in for a period in the area.
When Rex Harrison turned up in the 1950s in the tiny fishing village of Portofino, he triggered a word-of-mouth epidemic among his Hollywood friends. Luckily the area that has remained relatively unspoiled during the decades and has kept its air of exclusivity. As you stroll along the alleyways, you can almost see the ghosts of Cary Grant and Ava Gardner on holiday.
And this authentic atmosphere has ensured a constant stream of the film stars and jet-setters flogging to Liguria to continue to this day...
