Catching a Train from Genoa Port To Milan

We will be visiting Genoa in April when we finish a cruise (MSC cruise line).
When we disembark from the ship we need to catch a train to Milan, where we have booked a hotel for one night.
Can you please tell me if I need to purchase my tickets in advance or on the day? I believe there are two train stations close to the port ( Which one should we go to for Milan Centrale Station?).
We are from Australia and any information would be greatly appreciated.
Kind regards

Hello Florise,
You are correct, there are two main stations in Genoa - 'Genoa Brignole' and 'Genoa P. Principe'. The closest rail station to the cruise terminal is
Genova P. Principe which is about 500 meters from the cruise terminal and thus at a walking distance (around 10 minutes), or by taxi (2 minutes) which will cost you about €5.00.
There are trains going to Milan from both stations but since
Genova P. Principe is closer to where you disembark I would recommend you catch your train from there. In any case, the trains that leave from the other train station - 'Genoa Brignole' - first stops at 'Genoa P. Principe' before continuing to Milan.
You do not need to pre-book your ticket, you can just buy it on the day at the station. However, if you do not want to deal with it on the day, you can buy it in advance here :
TrenItalia Portal The trains seem to be departing every hour, 20 mins past the hour.
We hope this help and all the best,
Gianfranco
